As a child growing up in Mexico, Magally Deveau was fascinated by her grandmother's crochet work, and spent many happy hours watching her make objects that were not only beautiful but also useful. While she was still a schoolgirl her father was transferred to Houston and brought his family with him. For the first few years, as they travelled back and forth between Mexico and Texas, Magally found art to be a valuable support and resource while she was still learning English.
She attended the University of Houston on a competitive Fine Arts scholarship, graduating in 1998 with a BFA in sculpture and specialties in jewelry and metalsmithing. By this time she had already developed her unique "milligrain" metalwork style, reminiscent of the crochet work she had admired as a child, and inspired by delicate antique lace and embroidery.
She played a visible role in Houston's fine arts community, working as a docent at the Contemporary Arts Museum and participating in many arts education programs. She also served as a vice president of the Houston Metal Arts Guild, organizing educational events for members. She had already begun to exhibit art jewelry and in 1999 was asked to design the Adelita Award to honor the achievement of Hispanic women in Houston.
In 2003, Magally moved to New York City, where she continued to enjoy successful exhibition and wholesale opportunities. She also attended New York's Fashion Institute of Technology and Gemological Institute of America, where she studied jewelry design and production rendering techniques. Her current collections are made of 14K or 18K gold, fine silver, or sterling silver, with gemstones and pearls that reflect the seasons.
In 2010 Magally moved again to the beautiful historic town of Guilford, Connecticut. Now just a train ride away from New York, she loves working closely with her many contacts in the jewelry district, and experiencing both the peace of her home surroundings and the energy of the metropolitan design, fashion, and art world.
