Penny S. Hanscom

Penny Hanscom paints with fabric. She creates intricate collages from hundreds of pieces of fabric, each one carefully selected for its contribution to the larger composition. She has spent the last decade developing and mastering her unique process. Every work is precisely planned and meticulously executed.

Her subjects range from humorous to serious, still life to social commentary, and are inspired by the people and events of daily life. Penny also draws inspiration from art history and the great masters. Whether creating a realistic interpretation of René Magritte’s quiet surrealism or a humorous statement on culture, her attention to detail and understanding of color and composition are evident. Penny’s landscapes in particular possess a persuasive sense of spatial depth not often seen in fiber art.

Penny’s collection at Terrestra consists of original, one-of-a-kind textile art collages influenced by the style of Austrian painter Gustav Klimt (1862-1918). Each of these unique works is hand-drafted and handmade. Many of the background fabrics are hand-decorated with gold ink.

A well-known California artist, Penny lives and works in Sacramento. Her award-winning artwork has been exhibited at the Crocker Art Museum, the California State Fair, the Permanent Collection of American River College, and in numerous galleries throughout Northern California. Her work is also in private collections throughout the United States.
